    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • This healthy mixed berry smoothie is dairy-free, vegan and naturally gluten-free.
    • It's a delicious and easy way to get in some nutrients- perfect for picky eaters.
    • It's ready within 5 minutes.

    Ingredients & Substitution Notes

all ingredients needed to make frozen berry smoothie: frozen mixed berries, vanilla yogur of choice, banana, almond milk or other milk of choice.
    • Frozen Mixed Berries: I bought a mixed berry blend that consisted of frozen blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and red currant. Feel free to use your favorite berries.
    • Banana: Naturally sweetens the smoothie and adds some nice thick texture. Make sure to choose a ripe banana with lots of brown spots. If you can't have banana, replace with 2 (Medjool) dates or 3 regular normal ones.
    • Milk: I chose almond milk but any milk of choice such as soy milk, oat milk or regular dairy-milk will work. I imagine it could also work with light coconut milk but I have never tried it.
    • Vanilla Yogurt: For a vegan smoothie choose vanilla soy yogurt. If you don't need this smoothie to be dairy-free you can also use vanilla greek yogurt. It's natural sweetness balances out the tangy berry flavors very well.

    See recipe card for quantities.

How to Make a Frozen Berry Smoothie

This healthy berry smoothie calls for only 4 basic ingredients. All you'll need is a strong blender.

all ingredients for the frozen berry smoothie (mixed frozen berries, banana, almond milk, vanilla yogurt) in a blender.

STEP 1: Blend. Put all the ingredients (mixed frozen berries, banana, milk of choice & vanilla yogurt) into a blender.

finished blended smoothie in a blender.

STEP 2: Adjust. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust consistency and sweetness. Serve with some fresh berries or coconut flakes on top (optional).

    Top Tips

    • Ripe Banana: To ensure that the banana adds some natural sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie, make sure to pick a ripe one with lots of brown spots on the skin.
    • Good Blender: You'll need a fairly high-powered blender to ensure that you'll end up with a smooth texture.
serving glass filled with frozen berry smoothie, topped with frozen berries. next to it fresh blueberries and strawberries.

    Variations

    • Vegan: This smoothie will be vegan as long as you choose a non-dairy milk alternative and vanilla soy yogurt.
    • Consistency: Feel free to change the texture of the smoothie by adding more/less milk. For a thinner smoothie, gradually add more milk. For a thicker smoothie, add a couple more frozen berries.
    • Sweetness: The sweetness of this smoothie will depend on the ripeness of your banana and the berries you choose. Redcurrent and blackberries taste rather sour whereas raspberries and strawberries are sweeter.
    • Yogurt: If you can't find any vanilla yogurt, you could use plain greek yogurt or plain soy yogurt and add 2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. However, the taste won't be as sweet.
    • No Banana: To create a frozen berry smoothie without banana, simple replace it with 2 (Medjool) dates or 3 regular normal ones.

    Optional Add-Ins

    • Nut Butter: Add a teaspoon of nut butter such as peanut butter or homemade almond butter for some extra protein and healthy fats.
    • Seeds: We love adding 1-2 teaspoon of chia seeds or flax seeds to our smoothies for some extra fiber. Hemp seeds would also work but be careful, they have quite a strong taste.
    • Sweetener: If you feel that the smoothie isn't sweet enough, you could add an additional sweetener of choice such as maple syrup or honey (not vegan).
    • Leafy Greens: such as a handful of fresh spinach adds a nutritional boost.

    Storage

This smoothie tastes best when enjoyed right away but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.

    FAQs

Can I use a frozen banana?

Yes, you could also use a frozen instead of a fresh banana. This will result in an even creamier smoothie. Feel free to add more milk.

    Can frozen berries be blended?

If you have a fairly strong blender, there's no need to defrost frozen berries to make a smoothie. The stronger the blender, the smoother the texture will be. For best results I recommend a high-powered blender such as a Vitamix.

    Is this berry smoothie healthy?

Generally, berries are loaded with antioxidants which help keep free radicals at bay. They are also high in fiber and other nutrients such as vitamin C, K1 and manganese. You can read more about the health benefits of berries here.
