Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's a dairy-free smoothie that's vegan and naturally gluten-free.
- It's made from fresh ingredients and there's no yogurt included.
- It's naturally sweetened with bananas without any extra sugar added.
- You'll only need 3 basic ingredients.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Milk: We used oat milk in this recipe because it's naturally quite sweet. You could use any dairy-free milk of choice though such as soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk or even coconut milk. Regular whole milk would also work if you don't need this recipe to be vegan.
- Frozen Banana: Using frozen bananas results in a thick and creamy smoothie so I highly recommend using frozen ones. Simply cut them into pieces, put them into a ziploc bag and pop them in the freezer the night before. I also highly recommend using ripe bananas because they are naturally sweeter.
- Fresh Strawberries: You could replace the fresh strawberries with frozen strawberries but you might need to add a little bit more milk then.
- Vanilla Extract (optional): This is optional but highly recommended. It adds some nice, subtle vanilla flavors that pair really well with the strawberry flavors.

Step by Step Instructions
Making your own smoothies from scratch is super easy. This delicious fruit smoothie comes together in less than 5 minutes.
Equipment-wise you will need a blender. The stronger the blender, the creamier the smoothie will be. I highly recommend using a high-powered blender like a Vitamix.
STEP 1: Blend. Simply place all of the ingredients (strawberries, frozen banana, oat milk, vanilla extract) into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.
STEP 2: Adjust. Taste and add more banana or another sweetener of choice if you want a sweeter smoothie. Gradually add more milk if you prefer a thinner smoothie. Add more frozen banana chunks if you prefer a thick texture.
Top Tips
- Ripe Bananas: They are responsible for the natural sweetness in this smoothie so make sure to use ripe ones.
- Frozen Banana: Using frozen instead of fresh bananas will result in a super creamy texture! Simply chop ripe bananas into bite-sized pieces and put them in the freezer the night before.
- Good Blender: For best results, I recommend using a strong blender.
Variations
- Adjust sweetness: Feel free to make this smoothie sweeter by adding more frozen bananas, a couple of dates or some maple syrup, honey or another sweetener of choice.
- Adjust texture: For a thinner texture, add more milk. For a thicker smoothie, add more frozen banana pieces.
- Nut Butter: Add a tablespoon of Almond Butter of peanut butter for some healthy fats, some extra protein and a creamier texture.
- Seeds: Feel free to add a teaspoon of chia seeds, flaxs eeds or hemp seeds.
- Leafy Greens: Add a handful of baby spinach to give this delicious smoothie a nutritional boost.
- Protein Powder: Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder for a high-protein smoothie.
Storing
This smoothie tastes best when consumed right away but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.
FAQs
This simple smoothie consists of only whole foods and there's no added sugar included. Bananas are a great source of potassium, vitamin c, vitamin b6 and magnesium. They are also a good source of fiber. Strawberries are a great source of antioxidants, manganese, potassium and vitamin c. Usually, ingredients like chia seeds, flax seeds or nut butter helps with a creamier consistency. In this recipe, the frozen banana adds a creamy texture to this smoothie.
I do not recommend adding ice cubes. It does thicken the smoothie, but once the ice melts, it waters it down.
