This refreshing banana carrot smoothie consists of only 3 simple ingredients. It's thick, creamy and ready in less than 5 minutes.

Smoothies are a great way (and one of my favorite ways) to get in some nutrients. This 3 ingredient carrot smoothie is a simple fruit smoothie but can be customized by adding more fruits and veggies.

Ingredients & Substitution Notes
- Frozen Banana: Adds some natural sweetness and a creamy texture to this smoothie. I do not recommend using fresh bananas instead because this won't give the smoothie its deliciously thick consistency.
- Unsweetened Orange Juice: Make sure to use unsweetened natural orange juice. You can of course also make fresh-squeezed orange juice at home.
- Carrots
See recipe card for quantities.
Top Tips
- Ripe Bananas: The riper your banana, the sweeter your smoothie will be. Choose very ripe banana with lots of brown spots.
- Peel Carrots: I recommend peeling the carrots because their skin can sometimes taste a bit bitter.
- Adjust: This smoothie can easily be adjusted to personal taste by adding more fruits and veggies. See our suggestions below.
How to make a banana carrot smoothie
STEP 1: Blend. Place all of the ingredients into a high-speed bender. Blend until smooth.
STEP 2: Adjust. For a thinner smoothie, gradually add more juice or water. For a sweeter smoothie, add more banana, 2-3 dates or your sweetener of choice.
How to freeze bananas
Peel and chop your bananas into 3-4 bize-sized coins. The smaller the pieces, the easier it will be for your blender to break them down. Then add them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze. That way they won't stick together.
Once frozen, you can add them to an airtight container or freezer-friendly bag and store them up to 1 week in the freezer.
Variations
- Sweeter Smoothie: This smoothie is naturally sweetened. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add more frozen banana, 2-3 soft regular dates or 1-2 Medjool dates. Other sweeteners like honey or maple syrup also work.
- Thinner Smoothie: For a thinner consistency, gradually add more orange juice or water.
- Thicker Smoothie: For a thicker texture, add more frozen banana. I don't recommend adding ice cubes for a thicker consistency because it waters down the smoothie quite a bit.
Optional Add-Ins
- Carrot Greens: Did you know that carrot greens are edible? Give them a good wash and add some to your smoothie for some extra nutrients. We recommend using organic carrots.
- Other Fruits: Feel free to customize this smoothie's taste by adding other fresh fruits such as apples, pineapple, mango or berries.
- Leafy Greens: Add a handful of baby spinach or kale to give this smoothie a boost in nutrients.
- Protein Powder: Turn this into a banana carrot protein shake by adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
- Plain Yogurt: Add some natural Greek yogurt or a non-dairy alternative to create an even creamier texture.
- Nuts or Nut Butter: To make this smoothie more filling, add a handful of walnuts, Brazil nuts (great source of selenium), peanut butter or homemade almond butter.
- Seeds: Talking about healthy fats- we love adding a tablespoon of chia seeds, hemp seeds or flax seeds to almost all our smoothies.
- Ginger: Add a TINY piece of fresh ginger for some tangy flavors- tastes exceptionally good in combination with carrots.
- Spices: Feel free to add some spices such as a dash of cinnamon or cardamom.
- Vanilla Extract
Meal Prep Options
- Frozen Banana: The frozen banana will need to be prepared the evening before.
- Smoothie: The whole smoothie can also be prepared ahead of time. Store in an airtight jar in the fridge- that way you'll have a delicious smoothie ready-to-grab the next morning.
Storage
Can be stored in a jar with a lid in the fridge for up to 2 days. Give the smoothie a good shake before consuming.
FAQs
It depends. If you use organic carrots and gave them a good wash, there's nothing wrong with not peeling them. However, the carrots skin will taste slightly bitter!
The frozen banana gives this smoothie its creamy texture, therefore I would not recommend using a fresh banana.
You could use your milk of choice such as regular dairy milk or a non-dairy milk alternative (almond milk, soy milk or other). However, this will result in a very different taste!
