Ingredients & substitution notes
- Beetroot: I used raw beetroot but you can also use pre-cooked beetroot, I tried both and both options work fine. Pre-cooked will be more convenient since you don't have to peel them and they are readily available in most grocery stores. I slightly prefer the taste of fresh ones over pre-cooked ones.
- Frozen Rasberries: can be replaced with other types of frozen berries.
- Frozen Bananas: provides some natural sweetness and a creamy texture. I recommend using very ripe bananas as they are much sweeter.
- Milk: I used unsweetened soy milk but you could use any non dairy milk of choice such as unsweetened almond milk or oat milk. I have not tried this smoothie with regular cow's milk. Instead, you could use unsweetened orange juice or apple juice.
- Fresh Orange: can be replaced with other citrus fruits of choice.
- Carrot: Adds some additional vitamin c and earthy taste.
- Yogurt: You could use any unsweetened, plain yogurt of choice. I used Greek yogurt but you can use soy yogurt for a dairy-free version.

How to make a beetroot smoothie
This beetroot smoothie recipe comes together in no time. All you'll need is a fairy strong blender and a couple of simple ingredients.
STEP 1: Prep. Peel beetroot and carrot using a vegetable peeler. In order to support your blender, chop carrots and beetroot into smaller pieces. Then add all the ingredients into a blender, starting with the harder veggies first.
STEP 2: Blend and adjust. For a sweeter smoothie, add more banana, dates or maple syrup. If you prefer a thinner consistency, gradually add a little milk or water.
Top tips
- Powerful Blender: The raw beetroots, carrots and frozen banana are challenging to puree for regular blenders. The stronger the blender, the smoother the drink will turn out. For best results I recommend using a high speed blender and chopping the ingredients into smaller pieces.
- Peel Beetroot & Carrot: I recommend peeling both the fresh beetroot and carrot.
- Frozen Bananas: I always buy a couple of really ripe ones and as soon as I come home, cut them in pieces and freeze them. This way I usually have them ready to use in smoothie recipes.
Variations & flavors
- Cooked Beets: You can also use cooked beets to make this beetroot smoothie. They are often more easily available.
- Beet Flavor Intensity: You can easily adjust the intensity of the beet flavors in this smoothie. For more suble flavors, use only ½ a beetroot.
- Other fruits: Instead of raspberries you could use any type of berries such as frozen blueberries, strawberries or frozen mixed berries. You could also replace the berries with frozen pineapple pieces or mango chunks for more tropical flavors. I also love adding pomegerate seeds or an apple.
- No Milk: Instead of milk you could use unsweetened fruit juices such as fresh apple juice or orange juice. This will slightly change the flavor though.
- Adjust texture: Gradually add more liquid for a thinner smoothie.
- Adjust sweetness: To intensify the suble sweetness of this smoothie you could add some dates or a tablespoon of maple syrup or honey.
Optional add-ins
- Leafy Greens: are a great addition. I baby spinch or you could also utilize the beet greens. Kale would also work but make sure to enjoy the smoothie right away, because kale can quickly turn bitter if blended.
- Protein Powder: Feel free to add a scoop of your favorite protein powder. When using a vegan protein powder I like using a mix of different ones (e.g. pea, hemp, rice) to ensure that they contain all the essential amino acids.
- Seeds: a tablespoon of flax seeds or chia seeds to add some healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids.
- Nut Butter: such as Homemade Almond Butter or natural beanut butter add some creaminess and additional taste.
Prep ahead and storage
- Prep ahead: In case you haven’t got any frozen bananas in the freezer, cut 1 banana into 4 pieces and freeze it overnight. I always keep a couple of very ripe bananas in the freezer so that they are ready to use in smoothie recipes.
- Storage: This smoothie taste best when consumed right away.
FAQs
For an ultra creamy smoothie I do recommend using a high-speed blender. If you only have a regular blender I recommend chopping up all the ingredients into smaller pieces to facilitate the blending process.
Yes, you could. However, the banana does 2 things here: 1. since it’s frozen, it makes the smoothie creamier and 2. it adds some subtle sweetness. To still end up with a creamy smoothie, I recommend adding some ice cubes and less liquid. To make up for the sweetness, add some dates or maple syrup.
