Why you'll love this recipe
- Easy, 2-step recipe: Perfect for busy mornings when you are short on time.
- Dairy-free: The frozen banana gives your smoothie the perfect creamy consistency without adding dairy products or plant-based milk.
- The perfect base recipe: Be creative and try other flavors in line with building a tasty tropical smoothie. Try frozen mango, lychees, pineapple, papaya, or any other tropical fresh fruit. All of these go beautifully with fresh lime.
Ingredients & substitution notes
- Banana: Frozen banana forms the creamy, silky base for this smoothie. If you don’t have banana, try avocado (you will need to add ice to chill the mixture). Add coconut milk, soy, or almond milk for extra creaminess.
- Passion fruit: Choose ripe fruit for a deep, rich flavor.
- Unsweetened passion fruit juice: Ready-to-pour juice is great. Alternatively, add a little water to a fresh fruit pulp.
- Lime: Fresh lime is best for this recipe. You can also use fresh lemon juice.

How to make a passion fruit smoothie
STEP 1: Cut the passion fruits in half. Add the scooped-out passion fruit pulp, frozen banana, lime juice and passion fruit juice into a blender.
STEP 2: Blend everything together. Taste and adjust as needed. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, pour in a little maple syrup or add a few dates. Add more juice if the consistency is too thick, and frozen banana to thicken it up.
Top tips
- Use ripe fruit: for the best flavor! Ripe passion fruit has wrinkly skin, so keep a lookout. These will give you the best fruit pulp. Also make sure to use a ripe banana!
- Sieve the passion fruit: Some people don't enjoy the crunch of passion fruit seeds in their smoothies. If that’s you, sieve the passion fruit pulp to remove the seeds before adding it to the blender.
- Blend well: To ensure a silky and well-blended smoothie, blend the ingredients for an adequate amount of time. Start at a low speed and gradually increase to high until the mixture is smooth and creamy without any lumps or chunks.
- Garnish: styling the drink makes all the difference. Try other tropical elements like toasted coconut flakes. Pop on a few mint leaves, berries, or a wedge of passion fruit.
- Chilled Smoothie: add ice cubes - but not too many, or you’ll water it down. Try chilling your ingredients before blending them.
- Adjust thickness: Thin it back with a little plant-based milk or thicken it up with additional frozen banana.
Variations & add-ins
- Add other fruits such pineapple, mango, papaya or dragon fruit work well if you want to add more flavors.
- Without Banana: Instead of a frozen banana you could use frozen mango or frozen pineapple.
- Milk instead of juice: try almond milk, soy milk, rice, oat, or coconut milk if you prefer a creamier texture.
- Another type of juice: if you had to substitute one of the juices, orange juice or mango juice work best.
- Protein Powder: For a protein hit! Vanilla or berry-flavored will work best.
- Seeds: Chia and flax seeds will boost the nutritional value of your smoothie.
- Yogurt: for a thicker-bodied smoothie – try plain or a fruity variant.
- Ice cream: turn this into a dessert by adding creamy vanilla ice cream.
- Granola: Sprinkle in a tablespoon or two of healthy granola if you like a textured smoothie.
- Green goodness: Incorporate spinach or kale into this recipe. You may need to thin it back with a little coconut milk or water in this case.
Storage
This recipe is best when consumed immediately. If you have to store it, store the smoothie in an airtight container for a day in the fridge. Give it a stir or a shake if it separates.
You could also freeze any leftover smoothies in ice trays and pop these frozen cubes into future smoothie batches.
FAQs
Absolutely! Adding other fruits to your passion fruit smoothie is a great way to enhance the flavor profile and create a unique blend.
Fruits like pineapple, mango, banana, strawberries, or even citrus fruits can complement the tangy sweetness of passion fruit. Feel free to experiment with different fruit combinations to find your favorite flavor combination.
While it's best to enjoy this smoothie immediately after preparation to retain its freshness and vibrant flavors, you can make it ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for a short period.
However, the smoothie's texture may change slightly upon refrigeration, and separation may occur. To combat this, give the smoothie a quick stir or shake before serving.
If your passion fruit smoothie turns out too thick, you can gradually add more liquid (such as water, juice, or milk) and blend until the desired consistency is achieved. On the other hand, if your smoothie is too thin, you can add more frozen fruit, ice cubes, or even a spoonful of yogurt to thicken it up.
If you prefer a smooth texture without the seeds, you can strain out the seeds or use juice instead.
