This lemon ginger turmeric shot delivers a concentrated mix of some powerful ingredients. The combination of spicy ginger paired with fresh turmeric and lemon juice results in a fiery little shot that's perfect if you're ready to try something new.
This wellness shot is similar to my Lemon Turmeric Ginger Tea recipe; it’s just a lot hotter because, with the shot, you’re drinking the blended ginger as opposed to the infused tea version.
This shot literally took my breath away the first time I tried it- that's why I’d recommend sipping it at first. Eventually, you should be able to knock it back in one or two gulps.
I love the fiery ginger in this recipe and together with the turmeric root it really brings the flavor of this shot back down to earth. Rich and grounding, it harmonizes with the ginger beautifully.

Lemon ginger turmeric shot benefits
- Fresh turmeric root includes curcumin which as been shown to be a powerful antioxidant.
- Lemon will load you up with vitamin C, which may help support your immune system.
- Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties which can help your immune system
Ingredients & substitution notes
- Ginger: Seek out lovely juicy-looking fresh ginger root. The pieces with a little shoot of the green and pink root are often the best. Steer clear of any wrinkly, dehydrated ginger, as you won’t get nearly as much juice as you will from a younger piece.
- Turmeric: If you can’t find any fresh turmeric, you can make up a little turmeric juice by mixing a touch of water and high-quality ground turmeric instead.
- Lemon: freshly squeezed lime, orange, or grapefruit juice will work in place of lemons if needs be. I really recommend fresh lemon instead of store-bought lemon juice.
- Maple syrup: Agave nectar, honey, a drizzle of date syrup, or brown rice syrup can work as alternatives. Or leave it out completely, for a unsweetened shot.

How to make a lemon ginger turmeric shot
STEP 1: Peel the ginger and the turmeric (I always wear gloves to protect my hands and nails from turmeric stains).
STEP 2: Squeeze the fresh lemon juice.
STEP 3: Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender.
STEP 4: Blend the ingredients until they are smooth.
STEP 5: Place a nut milk bag, cheese cloth or fine-mesh strainer over a glass jar or bowl. Add the lemon ginger mix from the blender.
STEP 6: Strain the mixture through the bag.
Katie's tips
- Turmeric stains! It stains anything plastic (including the jug of your blender), your skin, cutting boards, and the nut milk bag/cheese cloth. Don’t leave the shots in contact with the equipment longer than necessary. Ensure you rinse the blender as quickly as possible, and use a glass blender jug if you can. Wearing gloves is a safe way to protect your hands, fingers and nails from turning bright orange.
- Adjust flavors: If the shot tastes to fiery, dilute it with water, fresh orange juice, coconut water, or fruit juice such as unsweetened apple juice for gentler flavors.
- Fresh ingredients: Use the freshest ingredients you can find in the store.
Optional add-ins
- Black Pepper: works together with turmeric to maximize the benefits of curcumin. Adding a pinch of black pepper apparently might help with the absorption of curcumin.
- Orange Juice: If you are looking for a sweeter, less tangy taste, you could use fresh orange juice instead of fresh lemon juice. It will also leave you with a sweeter shot.
- Cayenne Pepper: to take the zing to the next level!
- Herbs: mint and basil will be a great addition to your shot.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: is a happy partner to these ingredients. Try adding a tablespoon or two if you can stand the taste.
Storage
- To store: Store your blend in an airtight container such as a glass or mason jar for up to 4 days.
- To freeze: This mix will also keep really well in the freezer. I like to freeze mine in ice cube trays and pop out cubes to defrost as and when I need them.
Frequently asked questions
Fresh turmeric in my opinion is often harder to find than fresh ginger. You could replace it with powdered turmeric but the shot will lose some taste.
Very intense! It’s a shot… it has strong flavors but can be diluted, especially if you want to ease into taking them.
I find that baking powder and lemon work best to remove turmeric stains. I usually make a paste of 2 packs of baking powder and 1 freshly juiced lemon, brush it on, let sit overnight and remove it the next day. You might need to repeat this process several times.
Yes. Just peel lemons and add them, together with the other ingredients to your juicer (use it according to the instructions of your machine).
