What is a Piña Colada?
A piña colada is an alcoholic drink, traditionally made with rum, coconut milk and/or coconut cream and pineapple juice. It was probably invented in Puerto Rico and literally translated it means "strained pineapple".
What is a Piña Colada Mocktail?
A mocktail refers to an alcohol-free version of an alcoholic drink- in our case a piña colada. Virgin drink recipes come in handy if you can't or don't want to consume any alcohol but don't want to miss out on the deliciousness of the flavors each drink provides.
Ingredients & Substitution Notes
- Fresh Pineapple: For the ultimate pineapple flavor, this recipe calls for fresh pineapple. We used canned, unsweetened pineapple but you can cut a fresh, ripe pineapple into chunks yourself.
- Full-Fat Coconut Milk: We full-fat unsweetened coconut milk. The higher the fat content of the milk, the creamier your drink will turn out. The coconut milk we used had about 90% coconut extract.
- Fresh Pineapple Juice: Enhances the pineapple flavors. We recommend using unsweetened pineapple juice that consists of 100% pineapple without any additives.
- Fresh Lime Juice: Taste amazing in combination with the other flavors.
- Maple Syrup (optional): If you chose a very ripe pineapple, then you might feel that your drink is already sweet enough. Feel free to skip the maple syrup then or replace with any other sweetener of choice.

How to Make a Virgin Piña Colada
This pina colada is an easy recipe that only requires two simple steps. There's no cocktail shaker required but you will need a fairly strong blender for best results.
STEP 1: Prepare pineapple chunks. If you're using canned pineapple, thoroughly drain and rinse the pineapple chunks. If you want to cut your own fresh pineapple, cut it into bite-sized pieces.
STEP 2: Blend. Add all of the ingredients to a strong blender. Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust sweetness. Serve in a fancy glass over some crushed ice.
Top Tips
- Good Blender: To achieve a perfectly smooth and creamy texture, we highly recommend using a high-speed blender such as a Vitamix. A regular blender might not be strong enough to turn the pineapple chunks into a perfectly smooth drink.
- Ripe Pineapple: The riper the pineapple, the sweeter the drink will be.
- Chilled Drink: Use chilled pineapple juice and also put your coconut milk the fridge 15 minutes before preparing the mojito. This will result in a cold, refreshing drink.
Variations
- Refined-Sugar-Free: To keep this recipe refined sugar-free you could use coconut water instead of pineapple juice and skip the maple syrup. That way it's naturally sweetened with fruits only.
- Classic Pina Colada: This virgin pina colada can easily be turned into a traditional pina colada by adding some white rum.
Optional Add-In
- Non-Alcoholic Rum: Some liquor stores sell non-alcoholic white rum options. Feel free to add about 1 ½ ounces (45ml) per drink for some extra flavors.
Mocktail Garnish Ideas
We eat with our eyes first, right? Below you'll find some must-have garnish ideas:
- Glass: Choose fancy glassware. We love serving this mocktail in tall glass such as hurricane glass.
- Garnish: Add some mint leaves or desiccated coconut flakes as a topping.
- Cocktail Picks: Perfect for spearing fruits such as pineapple chunks, lime wedges or a maraschino cherry.
- Other Elements: Feel free to play around with the look by adding other elements such as a bright-colored straw or a cocktail umbrella.
Meal Prep Options
This delicious mocktail is meal-prep-friendly! You can make a bigger batch and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge until the next day. Add the ice cubes just before serving.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.
FAQ
It depends. When coconut milk is blended with frozen ingredients, then it gets flaky (due to the high saturated fat content of the milk). If you don't mind a different texture (it won't be as smooth), then you can use frozen pineapple cubes as well.
I wouldn't recommend adding them to the blender because it will water down the piña colada and turn the coconut milk flaky. However, you can add a couple of ice cubes to the serving glass to create a chilled drink.
Yes, you can easily turn this into an alcoholic drink by adding white rum (about 1 ½ ounces (45ml) per drink).
