Ingredients & Substitution Notes
- Watermelon: I highly recommend buying a seedless watermelon. That way, you can save time and don't need to deseed it yourself. To save more time, you could choose a pre-cut package. Also, choose a ripe watermelon to ensure that the mocktail is sweet.
- Frozen Strawberries: They add a nice cold, refreshing as well as sweet taste. I do not recommend using fresh ones because then you would need more ice cubes which would results in a slighty watered-down drink.
- Mint: Just as any classic mojito, this recipe calls for fresh mint leaves.
- Fresh Lime Juice: Additional, we add some freshly squeezed lime juice- adds some tangy flavors. Could be replaced with fresh lemon juice.
- Maple Syrup: Helps sweeten the drink and acts as a liquid for the blender. You could use agave nectar or honey instead.
- Brown Caster Sugar: Instead, you could use white sugar or more maple syrup.
- Cold Sparkling Water: Feel free to use any carbonated water of choice or make your own with a sparkling water maker instead. Alternativey, you could use soda water or any other lightly flavored soda of choice. Keep in mind though that thismight slightly change the taste.
- Ice Cubes: I prefer using smaller crushed ice cubes for this recipes (see video).
How to Make a Watermelon Mojito Mocktail
This virgin watermelon mojito is easy to make and ready in no time. Equipment-wise you'll need a strong blender with a tamper.
STEP 1: Blend. Put frozen strawberries, fresh watermelon cubes and maple syrup into a strong blender.
Blend until smooth. You might need to work with a tamper to help push the strawberries down to the blade during the first couple of seconds. It will blend easily as soon as the watermelon releases its natural liquids.
STEP 2: Assemble. Add mint, sugar and lime juice to a serving glass and help the sugar dissolve by stirring with a teaspoon.
Then fill ⅓ of the glass with ice cubes.
Then add the strawberry watermelon mixture from the blender.
And top off with some sparkling water. Garnish with some lime slices or a watermelon slice or additional mint leaves and serve right away.
Tools Needed
- High-powered blender with a tamper: Most high-speed blenders such as the Vitamix come with a tamper. You’ll need it to push down the frozen strawberries at the beginning of the blending process. If you don’t have a high-speed blender with a tamper I would recommend skipping the strawberries altogether. A regular blender (or even an immersion blender) should be able to break down the watermelon pieces easily.
Top Tips
- Seedless, Ripe Watermelon: To save you the hassle of deseeding the watermelon, choose a seedless one if possible! Also make sure to buy a ripe water melon as we want it to be sweet.
- Pre-Cut: To save even more time, you could buy pre-cut watermelon pieces.
- Chill: For the drink to be or stay cold and refreshing, the sparkling water should be chilled and cold. If you’re skipping the frozen strawberries then I would also recommend chilling the watermelon before blending.
- Lime Juice: I highly recommend using freshly squeezed lime juice over store-bought one. The difference in taste is definitely worth it!
- Garnish: Add a lime slice or use some of the mint leaves for garnish- because who doesn’t like getting served a mocktail that’s beautifully put together!
Meal Prep Option
The watermelon-strawberry mix can definitely be prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge. That way it’s ready to be used. I would recommend adding the club soda only shortly before serving though.

The watermelon mix from the blender can easily be made ahead of time. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day. Make sure to add the remaining ingredients (especially the sparkling water) shortly before serving.
