Why choose frozen fruits in smoothies?

    • It's super convenient! There's no chopping, washing or other prep work needed!
    • Frozen fruits have a longer shelf life in the freezer than fresh fruits!
    • They are also often cheaper and a more budget-friendly alternative!
    • Frozen fruits are also available during winter, making them a great option all year round.

    Ingredients & Substitutions

all ingredients needed to make frozen fruit smoothie without yogurt.
    • Frozen Berries: Berries are one of my favorite fruits to buy frozen. They are packed with antioxidants and last so much longer when frozen. They are also relatively low in fruit sugar. To create this frozen berry smoothie, you'll need frozen blueberries and raspberries. Feel free to use different types of berries such as frozen blackberries or strawberries instead.
    • Frozen Mango: The frozen mango chunks add some tropical flavors as well as sweetness.
    • Frozen Banana: Choose a ripe banana to add some sweetness. Place some banana chunks into a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer the evening before.
    • (Oat) Milk: We chose oat milk as our preferred type of milk but feel free to use a different type of non-dairy milk such as almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk or even coconut milk. Regular cow's milk will also work if you don't need this recipe to be vegan.

How to make a smoothie with frozen fruit

The great thing about this smoothie is that there's no prep work needed. While fresh fruit needs to be washed and prepped, making a smoothie with frozen fruit is so much quicker.

To keep this smoothie refined-sugar free, its sweet taste comes only from fruit and there's no added sugar included.

all ingredients for this smoothie in a blender.

STEP 1: Blend. Put all of the ingredients into a high-powered blender.

frozen fruit smoothie blended in a blender.

STEP 2: Adjust. If you prefer a sweeter taste, I recommend adding a couple of dates and a bit more milk. Otherwise, you could also add a splash of orange choice or maple syrup. Feel free to add your preferred sweetener. For a thinner smoothie, add more milk.

STEP 3 (optional): Assemble with fresh berries and serve right away!

For this fruity smoothie to turn out perfectly thick and smooth, you'll need a good blender.

    Top Tips

    • Frozen Bananas: We always keep a pack of frozen bananas stacked in the freezer. That way we have them ready and don't need to think about freezing them ahead of time.
    • Ripe Bananas: Make sure to freeze ripe bananas that already have some brown spots to ensure that they are sweet.
    • Strong Blender: To ensure that you'll end up with a creamy smoothie, My favorite high-speed blenders are by Vitamix or Bianco. I've also heard great things about Blendtec or Ninja.

    Variations

    • Mixed Fruit Assortment: Instead of buying individual packages of berries, you could opt for frozen mixed berries or other types of mixed fruit assortment of your choice.
    • Protein Powder: Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder to boost the protein content of this smoothie.
    • Nut Butter: Add a tablespoon of Homemade Almond Butter or peanut butter for some healthy fats and some extra protein.
    • Extra Greens: I usually add some veggies such as leafy greens to my fruit smoothies. One of my go-to's is frozen spinach. It's so much easier to store than fresh spinach.
    • Seeds: Add a teaspoon of chia seeds, flax seeds or hemp seeds for some healthy fats and extra fiber.

    FAQs

    Is frozen fruit healthy?

It's a common misconception that frozen fruit is less nutritious than fresh fruit but according to different studies, the nutrition content of frozen produce is very similar to fresh produce.

Is frozen fruit good for smoothies?

Using frozen instead of fresh fruit will result in a thicker smoothie even though there's no yogurt included.

    Notes

    • Berries: Feel free to use your favorite berries. You can easily replace the raspberries with strawberries or the blueberries with blackberries. Just make sure to use the same amount.
    • Mixed Fruit Assortment: Instead of buying individual packages of berries, you could also buy frozen mixed berries or other types of mixed fruit assortment of your choice.
    • Adjust sweetness: This smoothie is entirely sweetened with fruits and there's no added sugar included, hence the subtle sweetness. For a sweeter smoothie add a couple of dates, a splash of orange juice or your sweetener of choice.
    • Blender: For this smoothie to turn out perfectly thick and smooth, you'll need a good, high-powered blender that is strong enough to blend frozen fruit.
    • Milk: To keep this a dairy-free smoothie, I recommend using oat milk, almond milk or soy milk. If you don't need this to be a vegan smoothie, regular milk will also work.

I have not tried your smoothies but I will sure give them a try. Since I got Lyme's Disease I have to be very picky on what I can and cannot eat/drink. I am unable to have sugar or yogurt/milk. Your ingredients sound great and I will definitely give them a try. Thank you-Pat
