What is Matcha?
Matcha is green tea powder that is made of ground green tea leaves and is traditionally consumed in East Asia.
In contrast to green tea, matcha is not available in tea bags but the fine powder needs to be dissolved directly in water.
There are different quality grades when it comes to matcha. Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest-grade matcha and has a vibrant green color. Culinary grade matcha is often used in baking.
Because of its high amount of antioxidants, matcha is also associated with different health benefits.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Matcha Powder: Matcha tea powder can usually be found in big grocery stores or natural health food stores. Otherwise, you could order it online. You'll see that there's a difference in the quality of matcha powders you can get. There's culinary grade matcha or also ceremonial grade matcha which is the highest quality matcha. For best results, I recommend buying high-quality matcha powder.
- Water: Matcha needs to be dissolved in warm or hot (not boiling!) water.
- Oat Milk: This matcha drink calls for oat milk. It's naturally sweeter than other types of plant milk and tastes delicious in latte recipes. We highly recommend using a barista oat milk such as Oatly's. Feel free to try other dairy-free milk alternatives such as almond milk, cashew milk, soy milk or coconut milk instead. If you don't need this to be a vegan matcha latte you could also use regular dairy milk.
- Sweetener: Maple syrup is used as the main sweetener here. Feel free to use any sweetener of choice such as agave syrup, honey or brown sugar.
- Ice Cubes (optional): for an iced matcha latte
How to make a matcha latte with oat milk
This delicious drink comes together in no time. You could serve it iced or hot- depending on your personal taste.
Equipment-wise you could prepare it with a matcha whisk, a regular whisk, a blender or a milk frother.
STEP 1: Whisk together matcha and water. Start by whisking together the matcha and warm water.
Then add the maple syrup and whisk again until fully dissolved.
You could either use a traditional matcha whisk, a regular whisk, a blender or a small electric milk frother.
Step 2: Add oat milk. Now it's time to add your oat milk or other milk of choice. You could either enjoy your matcha latte cold or warm.
Iced Matcha Latte
For an iced latte, fill ¼ - ⅓ of the glass with ice cubes. Then add the matcha-water mix.
Pour in cold oat milk. Add some cold frothed oat milk for a silky smooth layer on top. Serve your delicious homemade matcha latte in a tall glass or mason jar.
Warm Matcha Latte
Heat the oat milk in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Pour the hot milk onto the matcha-water mix. If you like, you could add some warm frothed oat milk on top.
Top Tips
- High-quality matcha: If you can, opt for ceremonial grade matcha instead of culinary matcha.
- Don't skip the water: Matcha doesn't dissolve as well in milk so we always recommend whisking together the matcha powder with a small amount of water first (except when you're using a blender).
- Don't use boiling water: Matcha is usually dissolved in warm to hot (160 - 175°F/ 70-80°C), not boiling water. If your water is too hot, you could end up with a bitter-tasting matcha. Lower the temperature for a softer, mellower-flavored latte.
- Use a matcha whisk: The traditional way of dissolving matcha is with a matcha bamboo whisk. These are special whisks made of bamboo wood that make dissolving the matcha very effortless. Don't worry if you don't own one, below you'll find different methods of dissolving matcha without a whisk.
- Frothed Oat Milk: I love adding some additional frothed oat milk on top.
Variations
- Use a blender: If don't have a whisk, you could add the matcha powder, oat milk and maple syrup to a blender and blend until frothy. This will also fully dissolve the matcha powder. If you have a blender with a soup mode such as a Vitamix, you won't even need to warm up the oat milk on the stove but can heat it up in the blender. For an iced matcha latte, simply blend together the matcha powder, cold oat milk and maple syrup and serve in a glass filled with ice cubes.
- Use a milk frother: If you have an electric milk frother, you could use it instead of the whisk. Add the matcha powder and water to your milk frother and froth until fully dissolved. Pour it into a serving glass and add the oat milk.
- Adjust matcha: We used 1 teaspoon of matcha powder, for less intense matcha flavors, use only ½ a tsp.
- Adjust sweetness: This recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of maple syrup. Feel free to add more if you prefer a sweeter latte.
- Vanilla Matcha Latte: Vanilla pairs perfectly well with matcha, add ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract or vanilla oat milk for some subtle vanilla flavors.
FAQs
You could use any milk of choice, however, the higher the fat content, the creamier your latte will be. For a dairy-free matcha latte we prefer using oat milk because of its natural sweetness but this recipe works just as well with other types of milk.
Yes, matcha contains caffeine.
Generally speaking, matcha contains less caffeine than coffee. However, the actual numbers can strongly vary depending on the preparation method. A ½ teaspoon of powdered matcha has about 20-30 mg of caffeine and a 8-ounce cup of coffee has around 95mg of caffeine.
Matcha is usually dissolved in warm to hot, not boiling water (160 - 175F/ 70-80C). If your water is too hot, you could end up with a bitter-tasting matcha. Lower the temperature for a softer, mellower-flavored latte.
Absolutely, you could use a regular whisk, a blender or even a milk frother. See our "variations" section above for more details.
