Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's dairy-free (there's no yogurt included) and vegan.
- It's naturally sweetened with banana and there's no extra sugar added.
- It's ready in less than 5 minutes.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Frozen Banana: For a sweet smoothie, make sure to use ripe, brown bananas because they are naturally much sweeter than young, green bananas. This recipe calls for frozen bananas because they add a nice creaminess and texture to this smoothie. Simply chop up two (or more) bananas the night before, put them into a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer.
- Milk of Choice: We used oat milk to make this a vegan smoothie but feel free to use any milk of choice such as almond milk, soy milk or even coconut milk for a creamier texture. Regular milk will also work.
- Vanilla Extract: Gives this smoothie a delicious, subtle hint of vanilla.
- Chia Seeds (optional): Boosts the nutritional value and thickens the smoothie. You can use ground flax seeds instead or even omit it.
- Ice Cubes (optional): The frozen bananas already adds a thick and cold consistency so it's not necessary to add additional ice cubes but feel free to do so.
Step by Step Instructions
This healthy banana smoothie recipe is super easy to make and ready in less than 5 minutes.
I highly recommend using a good blender to achieve a creamy consistency.
STEP 1: Blend. Put all of the ingredients (frozen banana, milk of choice, chia seeds, vanilla extract) into your blender and blend until smooth.
STEP 2: Taste and adjust. This smoothie is naturally sweetened and there's no additional sugar included. If you want a sweeter smoothie, feel free to add more bananas, dates or your sweetener of choice such as maple syrup. For a thinner smoothie, add more milk. For a thicker smoothie, add more frozen bananas.
Top Tips
- Frozen Bananas: To save time, keep a couple of chopped-up bananas in the freezer. That way you don't have to prepare this smoothie in advance and always have some frozen bananas on hand.
- Ripe Bananas: The riper the banana, the sweeter the smoothie will be. Make sure to choose bananas that already have some brown spots.
- Powerful Blender: For best results, I recommend using a high-speed blender such as a Vitamix. It will be strong enough to turn the frozen bananas into a creamy smoothie.
Variations
- Protein Powder: Turn this into a protein-rich smoothie by adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
- Cocoa Powder: Chocolate and bananas is a super delicious combination. Add a teaspoon of cocoa powder to turn this into a chocolatey drink.
- Nut Butter: Add a scoop of Homemade Almond Butter or peanut butter for some additional protein and healthy fats.
- Spices: Add a dash of cinnamon or cardamom powder.
- Fresh Fruit: Feel free to add another fruit of your choice such as fresh blueberries, strawberries or pineapple for more tropical flavors.
- Leafy Greens: I also like adding some (frozen) spinach. The color won't be as nice but it adds some additional nutrients.
FAQs

I highly recommend using froze
The chia seeds in combination with the frozen banana chunks will turn this into a creamy smoothie even though there's no yogurt included. For an even creamier texture, feel free to add some nut butter.
